Singapore’s second largest offshore island, Pulau Ubin, which sits in the Johor Strait between Changi and the mouth of the Johor River, is perhaps the last place left for a peek into the rustic atmosphere of Singapore as it was in the 1960s. A Malay and Chinese community once engaged in farm-ing, granite quarrying, and fishing on the island. Today, only about 200 people live on Pulau Ubin. Measuring only 5 miles (8 km) across and 1 mile (1.5 km) wide, Pulau Ubin is the site of a traditional Malay fishing village. The remnants of rural kampung life can still be seen here: attap, or thatched-roof, and zinc-roofed wooden houses stand on stilts; sampans, or

wooden fishing boats, line the beach; and fishing nets spread out to dry in the sun. The island has a variety of flora and fauna and includes species that once existed on the mainland but now can only be found here. These include various fruit trees such as coconut, durian, rambutan, and jackfruit, wild berries, wild orchids, the insect-trapping pitcher plant, several medicinal plants and herbs, and mangrove flora. The island’s wildlife includes monkeys) monitor lizards, water hens, squirrels, fruit bats, and snakes such as pythons and cobras. The waters around the island teem with fish, crabs, and prawns. Pulau Ubin is also a good spot for bird-watchers as birds of prey such as eagles, kites, and hawks, and migratory birds nest here during the northern winter months. Bicycles can be rented from the jetty. The community center nearby has a good collection of photographs of life on the island during its heyday. There are also a few seafood rest-aurants, old-style coffee shops, and sundry shops that offer necessities for the visitor, such as insect repellent, sun-block, hats, canned drinks, and snacks. A couple of taxis ply the gravel tracks. Campsites, chalets, and lodges provide overnight accommodation on the island.
